Why is it important to talk about Learning theories?

Because the chosen learning theory will influence the structure, the content and adaptation/implementation of our teaching material.

There are four learning theories developed and applied in the past century. All can be found in elearning in some respects.

The bare learning content corresponds to the behaviorism.

The cognitive theory is presented in the interactions.

Constructivism and connectivism can be found in the way of delivering the content.

When I got an assignment to hold a course on elearning methods, I asked about the available technology. They answered " What are your needs", as they thought a projector was sufficient and I would talk for two days. I said, the course format should be blended elearning, as elearning is what the course is about, and it would be nice for the students to have access to PCs. The person in charge was startled, so I replied, in fact it is not vital. I can hold the course in a meadow with a piece of paper and pencil, after all the method is fundamental, not the tools. The person thought I was joking, but was not. The most important element of learning experience is the method, which is based on the chosen learning theory.
