![]() | Eötvös Loránd (1848 – 1919)Since 1950 our university in Budapest has borne the name of Eötvös Loránd. He was a prominent physicist of the 19-20th century, teaching and researching at the university throughout his life. His work was concentrated on three fields: surface tension, magnetism and gravity, to which he devoted nearly four decades. For an outsider these subjects don't seem too intriguing. Especially choosing gravity to research is puzzling, since it seemed well-worked out at that time. Still, he could add something new to every field, since he was an expert of fine measurement. |
